There are many pick-your-own orchards mainly in the Geihoku and Bihoku areas. Crispy "Kosui" pears, big and juicy "Hosui", and "Nijusseiki" pears with a balance of sweet and sour are available.
Chestnut picking is popular among families because it is easy even for children. On the plantation it's best to gather larger chestnuts that are in the sun rather than in the shade, so start on the edges. For your safety, bring some gloves.
You can enjoy picking various kinds of grapes, such as big Kyoho, Pione and Delaware grapes. The point is to pick medium-sized and dark-colored ones. For freshness and a longer shelf life, you should pick grapes as early as possible in the morning as the temperature is lower.
A wide variety of apples, such as Fuji, Tsugaru and Jonagold, make it possible to pick for a relatively long period of time. Choose brightly-colored applies in good locations in the sun. Wrap them in a piece of newspaper and then seal them with a plastic bag and store them in a refrigerator for a longer shelf life.
