Hiroshima Prefecture has many historically valuable buildings including Itsukushima Shrine, a world heritage site. In addition, kagura, one of Japan's ancient traditional performing arts, entertains you with its gallant and splendid dances as well as the sounds of flutes and taiko drums.

Buttsuji Temple, the head temple of the Buttsuji school of the Rinzai sect, is known as one of the most prominent zen training halls in Japan. Surrounded by old cedars and maple trees, the precincts have a solemn atmosphere. There are always visitors who come to see the temple, especially in spring, with the fresh verdure, and in autumn, when the leaves are crimson. The temple has valuable cultural properties.

When the autumn festivals begin, "Kagura Dancing" is held in various places all over the prefecture. Kagura Dancing has been the scared religious ritual as well as important for the residents in the region. Hiroshima Prefecture is well known for Kagura Dancing and has more than 300 Kagura Dancing teams.

The area called "little Kyoto of Aki Province" is the symbol of Takehara City. It is designated as an Important Traditional Building Preservation District by the national government. This historic district shows the remnants of the Edo period culture and it makes visitors feel as if they were transported through time. This sightseeing spot, with its stone-paved alleys, stucco walls and latticed windows has a very traditional Japanese atmosphere. Two of the typical merchant houses are open to the public, so please do not fail to visit them.
